Blepharoplasty in Twenties: Why Younger patients get eyelid reduction surgery.
Reasons why people have eyelid lifts at earlier ages.
Upper Blepharoplasty surgery helps reduce puffy upper eyelids and give a more awake appearance to the eye area for patients who have heavy upper eyelids. But many patients suffer from eyelid skin irritations due to having a double-eyelid or heavier eyelid than others. This often runs in families and if you had a parent with heavy eyelids or drooping eyelid skin, you may find that you, too, have the same condition and skin irritation or infection concerns.
Depending on your genetic heritage, and sometimes related to early life illnesses, women and men of a wide range of ages may sometimes opt for eyelid reduction surgery. More formally called a Blepharoplasty, there are two key procedures: Upper Blepharoplasty or Lower Blepharoplasty. There are other variations as well, including a Canthoplasty.
An eyelid lift can get you a more refreshed, awake looking eye lid area – it can also help with facial rejuvenation, vision and heavy or uneven eyelids.

Patient Experience: Getting an Eyelid Lift (Eyelid Reduction) – Upper Blepharoplasty – in the twenties
Patient Amea Mae, who is in her twenties, had eye irritations and infections relating to heavy eyelids.
She also wanted a natural-looking ‘open’ eye look, as the heavy lids were hiding her eye lashes and the area where she wanted to be more creative with her eye makeup.
In the image above, it’s easy to see the difference that eyelid surgery can make.
Upper Blepharoplasty: Eyelid lift surgery can help some patients to:
- see more clearly if the eyelid was sagging over the iris
- reduce skin infections if sagging eyelid skin was becoming irritated or trapping environmental toxins or makeup
- stop over-compensating for droopy eyelids (usually by raising one or both brows higher than normal, potentially leading to muscle asymmetry or an overactive brow response)
- look less tired or sleepy (helping patients appear more alert and fresh)
- reveal the lashes and the upper eyelid area to redefine the eye area and leave the patient looking younger or aesthetically balanced
- reduce high levels of asymmetry between eyelids
Eyelid Surgery Scars – Skinny Scars that heal in a way that are usually barely noticeable for many patients
All surgery leaves a scar, including eyelid reduction or eyelid lift surgery. If you look closely, you may be able to see them on some patients.
But for many eyelid surgery patients, the Blepharoplasty scars are placed adeptly in the crease of the eyelid, and made as skinny as possible – helping them to remain less visible. Everyone is different, however, so be sure to discuss this aspect of surgery before you decide to have YOUR eyelids reduced via an eyelid lift. There are also special treatments your Eyelid Surgeon can recommend to assist in reducing the visibility of the scars, such as special creams or ointments and specific post-op advice whilst you’re healing from the surgery.
For Amea, in the image above – her eyelid lift surgery incisions were still healing – and will leave a very minor, often barely noticeable scar – as seen in the image to the right, they are hidden in the upper eyelid crease.
Amea’s surgery was performed by one of Australia’s leading Eyelid Surgery experts, Dr Benjamin Burt, an Expert Oculoplastic Surgeon who focuses primarily on surgery of the eye/eyelid area.
