Rosacea Treatments in Melbourne
What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a skin disorder that can be common in adults in their 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s who have pale skin. The centre of the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin are most commonly affected areas with red patches, bumps and broken capillaries. Sometimes it may also present with acne. There are rosacea treatments that can help.
Symptoms of rosacea are a tendency to blush that becomes more noticeable and frequent. Those with rosacea also tend to have more easily irritated sensitive skin. Make-up, sunscreen, alcohol-based lotions and some skincare may cause redness, stinging, and irritation.
Doctors would usually prescribe oral antibiotics to treat rosacea patients but the rosacea may return once patients have completed the course of medication.
Recent advances in technology mean rosacea can now be treated successfully with laser and light systems.
Avoiding known triggers in combination with medicated skin care products, embarrassing blushing and redness from rosacea can be effectively treated and managed without relapses.
Main causes of Rosacea
Rosacea causes remain a mystery. Those who flush easily in response to warmth, spicy food, alcohol or embarrassment often exhibit symptoms and it can become more frequent and more noticeable over time.
Eventually the redness of the face can become constant only changing in intensity under differing circumstances. The nose and cheeks are most likely to be affected but it can also affect the ears and neck, and even the whole face.
Sun-damage also contributes to the symptoms and possibly the occurrence of rosacea. It can mainly affect those with fair skin, blue eyes and those of Celtic origins.
Over time small dilated blood vessels known as telangiectasia can also be observed on the face. Often referred to as ‘burst capillaries’ these telangiectasia are observed as a fine red pattern just below the surface of the skin.
Rosacea may also develop inflamed red bumps on the face often appearing with yellow heads in a pattern similar to the redness. As individual bumps go away, new ones appear and the overall appearance can be similar to that of acne.
Other symptoms of rosacea include a shiny and slightly oily appearance to the skin. More severely affected people may also find that the texture of their skin can change and thicken in some areas, developing an ‘orange peel’ texture. Occasionally more localized lumpy swellings may form, particularly over the nose, causing a disfigurement known as ‘potato’ nose or rhynophyma.
How can Rosacea be treated?
Laser Genesis
This powerful laser system has achieved exceptional results with the treatment of rosacea and redness to the face, neck and decolletage area. The laser selectively targets the haemoglobin in the blood vessels without causing thermal damage to the surrounding tissue. A course of six treatments is required with one treatment every 2-3 weeks. It is a comfortable procedure that takes 45 minutes with no recovery time and normal activities can be resumed immediately.
Medicated Skincare
Rosacea, redness and blushing are associated with inflammation, therefore medicated skincare that contains powerful anti-inflammatory ingredients is important to soothe the skin. Medicated skincare that contain anti-bacterial properties can also help to fight and prevent the acne that can sometimes be present with rosacea.
A quality moisturiser sunscreen that contains mostly zinc oxide or titanium oxide is highly recommended to protect the skin from harsh Australian climate. These ingredients have also shown to be gentle and soothing on the skin. Finally, mineral makeup is best for roasea as it is gentle on the skin and does not cause irritation or block the pores like most over the counter makeup brands.
