Eyelid Lift Surgery – 4 Signs You May Need It That Are Easily Missed

Is it time for a Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift Surgery) with a Oculoplastic or Plastic Surgeon?

They say “the eyes have it,” but what if your eyes USED to have it – and they no longer look as bright and youthful as they did?  For individuals of all ages, it seems the skin around your eyes always seems to the first area of your face to show ageing.  Cosmetic injections and anti-wrinkle injections from our Senior Injector, Sandra, can do a LOT to keep your eyelid area looking more youthful and less wrinkled.  Whilst Dermal Filler injections and wrinkle relaxing solutions can go a long way to restore a smoother look to the area around your eyes, you MAY be ready for Eyelid Surgery if you want to significantly reduce sagging, puffy eyelids ABOVE or BELOW your lashes.

Cosmetic Injections are great for SOME ageing eye concerns, including crow’s feet or tear troughs, but sometimes a Blepharoplasty is needed to get rid of puffy, sagging eyelid skin.

With or without cosmetic injectables and the best at-home eye cream treatments, your eyelids CAN age or sag to the point that eyelid surgery – e.g. a Blepharoplasty eyelid lift or a Canthoplasty – would be best for a longer-lasting and more noticeable rejuvenating result than anti-wrinkle and dermal filler injections would get you as stand alone treatments. In 2017 and 2018, it’s all about COMBINING treatments to get the best facial rejuvenation results for an individual patient.

Combining Eyelid Surgery and Eye Area Injectables (Anti-Wrinkle Solutions and Dermal Fillers or Tear Trough Fillers) often gets better results than stand-alone procedures.

Four Signs of Ageing Eyelids you May have Missed: Eyelid Lift Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Cosmetic injections CAN help remedy many signs of ageing eyelids.  However, once the skin has become heavy, puffy or sagging to the point the eyelashes or pupils are quite obscured by the eyelid skin, only a Blepharoplasty will tend to get you the results most people want for eyelid rejuvenation.

The key signs of ageing include sagging eyelid skin that has lost strength and collagen, atrophy of the skeletal system (leaving you with less facial bone support around the eye socket area and cheeks), deteriorating muscles around the eyes, and a general downwards drooping of the skin (known as ptosis, meaning skin droopiness).

Why do eyes age? Why your eyelids look heavy, saggy, droopy and puffy over time.

Eyes age because your eye area suffers from cumulative appearance changes over time.  It’s not just one thing that makes your eyes seem aged. It’s a combination of factors.

Crow’s feet don’t help, either – and weight changes, hormonal changes and other lifestyle events may have left your eyelid skin looking lax and less attractive.

We use our eyes and eyelids MORE frequently than nearly ANY other muscle driven facial expression structure of the face – which is partially why our eyes and eyelids are the FIRST parts of the page to show ageing.

Reasons for Eyelid Lift Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Typically, contributing factors to eyelid sagging or “puffy eye lids” that lead some people to consider Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty) surgery include:

  • blinking every few seconds when you’re awake
  • sun exposure
  • squinting
  • staring at computer screens
  • late nights (not getting enough sleep)
  • using the wrong skin care products
  • wearing a lot of makeup
  • rubbing your eyes
  • being too aggressive when removing makeup from your delicate eyelid skin
  • less skin resiliency over time (causing sagging)
  • genetic tendencies towards eye bags, dark circles or eyelid puffiness

So what’s the BEST age to get an Eyelid Lift Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?

best-age-blepharoplasty-eyelid-lift

The answer is that there is NO one perfect age for a Blepharoplasty or Canthoplasty surgery. IT all depends on the individual.

“We see patients of ALL ages,” notes our Team’s Eyelid Surgeon Expert, Oculoplastic Surgeon Dr Benjamin Burt (FACS, FRANZCO). “It really depends on the person, their genetics, their preferences for eyelid contours, and how they’ve aged.”

Why do younger people get eyelid lift surgery (Blepharoplasty or Canthoplasty)?

  • If a person in their 20’s has genetically heavy eyelids, they may not only be prone to skin infections or lid irritations, but they may look older than they are.
  • If a person in their 20’s or 30’s has heavy, puffy eyelids or early ptosis, their vision may be impeded (as with older patients).
  • Many younger patients want to be able to wear eye makeup on their lids, and if the eyelid isn’t being seen beneath the skin fold, or the eyelashes are covered up, the capacity to enhance the eyes with makeup is extremely limited.

When you’re considering eyelid lift surgery, you no doubt have looked into your mirror and seen tired-looking eyes and puffy, sagging eyelid skin – even after a great night’s sleep.

Certainly puffy eyelids, invisible eyelashes due to drooping eyelids and tear troughs under your eyes are signs it may be time for a cosmetic solution, surgical or otherwise.

However, there are other signs on your face that can help you determine whether you would genuinely benefit from an eyelid lift procedure – or which indicate you can wait a bit longer before resorting to the surgical eyelid rejuvenation options.

The BEST way to tell if YOU are ready for a Blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) surgery is to visit with an Experienced Oculoplastic or Plastic Surgeon who performs eyelid lift surgery and/or facelift, brow lift and other facial rejuvenation procedures such as Double Chin treatment using cosmetic injections.

But here’s how you can tell if it’s TIME for a surgical eyelid rejuvenation approach rather than just serums or injectables to reduce the wrinkles.

Look at Your Eyes Through the Eyes of the Pros

  • Seeing someone about potential eyelid rejuvenation surgery may sometimes be confronting.

  • That’s because you and your Oculoplastic Surgeon will be highly focused on the signs of ageing you want to change, including how advanced these signs of ageing have become over recent years.
  • On the upside, you’ll also be going into great details about what signs of skin ageing you’re unhappy with, and what you want to improve.
  • It can be quite exciting to learn what CAN be done through surgery and to see before and after photos – but DO keep your expectations realistic.  Remember, every patient is different.

So whilst many of us enjoy the wisdom that comes with age, a majority of us believe that we look older than we actually feel inside.

Seeing the impact of the passing years more closely – whether in a photograph or in 3D VECTRA image on a larger screen – can, indeed, be a real eye opener about the skin around our eyes.

Our external appearance doesn’t match our internal views of how young and vibrant we may feel despite the passing years.

Is it time for a Blepharoplasty or should I just continue with Cosmetic Injections and Dermal Fillers?

The best way to assess your eyelids is to see a professional Surgeon or Injecting Professional, one who will give you HONEST yet gentle feedback on which procedure will get you the best result.   Injections can be a great solution for some patients at certain times, and in conjunction with eyelid surgery – but at a certain point in time, only Plastic Surgery (Eyelid Reduction Surgery) will reduce the excess skin that is drooping over your eyes and eyelashes.  Puffy, drooping skin is known as “eyelid ptosis” and sometimes it’s actually a medical condition that requires remedying to improve your eyesight; other times, the eyelid surgery is entirely cosmetic.  Your GP may be able to help you understand the degree of ptosis you have; so ask for a referral from your GP to Dr Burt if you are struggling to see clearly due to having eyelid ptosis (sagging eyelids).

Clues you need a Blepharoplasty

Below is a list of some of the easily missed CLUES of being an ideal candidate for having blepharoplasty surgery to improve the look of your eye lid area.

xeomin face surgery, facial surgery

When done properly by an expert Eyelid Surgeon, early rejuvenation surgery can be better than late attempts at correction.

According to eyelid lift experts Dr Benjamin Burt, FRANZCO FACS in Melbourne:

  • It seems the longer you wait for eyelid surgery once the signs of ageing are quite noticeable
    • the less transformation you are apt to see
    • the more significant the procedure you might need
    • the more challenging it might be for your skin to adjust to its new eyelid contours
  • The more aged your skin is, the less collagen – and the less strength in the muscles of your eyelids
  • The older you are, in general, the slower your healing will tend to be after your eyelid surgery

In addition, ageing eyelids that droop or sag can lead to other problems that impact your eyes including vision.

How ageing eyelids cause problems for people (Source: Consumer Version, MERK MANUAL)

[The muscles that squeeze the eyelids shut decrease in strength with age. This decrease in strength, combined with gravity and age-related looseness of the eyelids, sometimes causes the lower eyelid to turn outward from the eyeball. This condition is called ectropion. Sometimes, because of age-related looseness affecting a different part of the eyelid, the lower eyelid turns inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the eyeball. This condition is called entropion [see info on Entropion and Ectropion]. In some older people, the fat around the orbit shrinks, causing the eyeball to sink backward into the orbit. This condition is called enophthalmos. Because of lax tissues in the eyelids, the orbital fat can also bulge forward into the eyelids, making them appear constantly puffy. Enophthalmos may cause a slight blockage of a person’s peripheral (side) vision.]” (Merk Manual, accessed 15 July 2016).

Other good reasons to have earlier-versus-later Eyelid Lift Surgery by an Experienced Plastic Surgeon or Oculoplastic Surgeon

  • If you get eyelid surgery earlier rather than later, not only can you potentially avoid some of the problems listed above, but you’ll also potentially have a slightly lower risk of surgical complications
  • This is because your overall health tends to become compromised with every passing decade.
    • This doesn’t occur for everyone, but in general – the passing years increase your risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and far less elastin and collagen in your skin (meaning your skin becomes less resilient and doesn’t tend to heal as well).
    • Plus, the underlying structures of the eye area can atrophy and leave some areas of your face looking a bit hollow – atrophy will impact on your final results

In other words, when you’re 70 or 80 years old, would you rather your eye lids reflected your biological age – or worse, if you’ve spent a lot of time in the sun? Or would you PREFER your eye lids to look a lot younger?

Here’s how to perform a preliminary self-assessment of your eyelid rejuvenation needs.

It can help to find a close friend to examine your face for these signs.

ageing eyelids - what does the mirror show?

Select a friend that won’t be brutal with words, however, as she checks for these tell tale signs that you might be a great candidate for a blepharoplasty.

Then discuss your findings with your Oculoplastic Surgeon, Injector or Skin Care Professional to see if he/she agrees with them, and whether or not these signs can be reversed.

FOUR Signs You Could Really Benefit from Eyelid Surgery

SIGN #1: Your eyes look hooded and it may even look like the rounded part of your upper eye has literally disappeared.

The ‘hood’ comes from the tissues that have lost their firmness.

Check your eyes right now. Are they hooded?

SIGN #2: When your friend looks at you from the side, your eyes look small, as if they are disappearing.

Let your friend tell you honestly whether or not you have this sign – and take a side-view photo just to check.

eyelids - eyes look small due to sagging skin

SIGN #3: The skin around your eye closest to your cheekbone looks sunken in and is somewhat darker.

  • The darkness tends to occur because the tissue is lax (meaning it has lost collagen, elastin and resiliency); there’s a loss of facial volume in this area
    • This can tell you to things: Firstly, that it’s not ONLY the upper lid that appears sunken and, secondly
    • This is a sign of aging of the overall face

Ask your friend to check for this sign right now.

Do you have the ‘sunkenness’ (a hollowed look) or infra-orbital pigment (darkness) near your cheekbone, close to your eye area?

how to get rid of dark circles under eyes

SIGN #4: There is darkness under your eyes (infraorbital dark circles)

  • The darkness comes from two things:
    • the thinning of the skin around the eyes
    • the loss of facial volume in the middle of your face (facial hollowing)

Ask your friend to check you for this sign or take a look at close-up photos.  Do you have circles under pigment?

For most people, these changes are all considered normal aspects of the aging process – but this doesn’t mean you have to live with it!

How you answer depended on how your eyelids, and genetic dispositions, have adapted to the processes of ageing.

In the next few days, if you look closer in the mirror – you may just end up seeing every one of these signs, again – plus other signs of ageing that can be remedied with the right approach, by the right type of surgeon, in the right facility, at the right time.  But sometimes that’s a combination of procedures, and eyelid lift surgery may only be one of several options you’ll have to get a brighter, more open-eyes (but natural looking) look.

If you want to get started, you can stop directing your focus into what the mirror is showing you about your eyelids.

Instead, try investigating solutions to ageing eyelid problems – such as eyelid surgery (an Upper or Lower Blepharoplasty).

Other Reasons to Consider Eyelid Lift Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery offers many advantages.

Here are some common reasons people have chosen Blepharoplasty surgery (sometimes in combination with anti-wrinkle injectables and dermal fillers).

  • Corners of eyes are drooping
  • Looking older has zapped their confidence, especially in the work force and in photos on digital profiles
  • Wanted to improve dark circles or restore lost facial volume (combination eyelid surgery, facial fat transfer procedures and/or dermal volumisers)
  • Impaired vision due to drooping upper eyelids
  • Visible white under lower eyes due to severe eyelid ptosis of the lower eyelid
  • Feel better about how they look
  • Less timid about brightly lit rooms or being filmed

What To Do Next if you want to remedy drooping eyelids

Now is a good time to get out those old pictures of yourself and look at the difference in how your eye lids looked when you were younger, and how they look now. You can’t fully turn back the clock, there’s no going backwards in time – but eyelid surgery CAN make a difference.

A blepharoplasty can at least temporarily decrease the appearance of ageing eyelids and even, for some, help improve vision by lifting sagging eyelid skin that has fallen over the pupil.
