Coco Ruby Skin Care Blog - Hyperhydrosis Sweating

What causes hyperhidrosis and how can it be treated?

Even the coolest Melbournians get a little hot and sweaty from time to time, especially when:

  • Exercising
  • Playing Sports
  • Visiting hot and humid climates
  • Temperatures exceed 25 degrees C
  • Feeling nervous or anxious such as during an interview or initial meeting

But what if you sweat profusely all the time?

The condition of excessive sweating is called hyperhidrosis. Fortunately, it can be treated.

But first, what is perspiration (‘sweat’)?

  • Sweat consists primarily of H2O (water) and electrolytes (sodium & chloride being the primary two).
  • Other elements found in perspiration include amino acids, lactate, urea, potassium, bicarbonate and calcium.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Sweating is a normal bodily function that occurs in order for physical temperature regulation.

Sweating is necessary and normal. Normal levels of perspiration help to cool you down when your body becomes too hot. Contrary to the concept of saunas, sweat isn’t the primary source of excreting toxins – that’s more likely to occur through urine and other methods of excretion rather than sweat for most people.

Perspiring becomes above what might be considered ‘normal”  when your body is sweating at times when your body does NOT need cooling for being too hot.

Athletes, Sports and Sweating (Perspiration)

Excess sweating can also be an issue during sports.

If you’re an athlete with hyperhidrosis, you might even sweat to a level that your hands and body become slippery and impact your sports performance.  Your facial sweat may also get into your eyes and impact your ability to focus on the bat, ball, hockey stick or hand signals.

People with hyperhidrosis usually find that excessive sweating occurs over several locations on their bodies.

Common areas impacted by hyperhidrosis excessive sweating include:

  • Feet
  • Palms of the hands
  • Underarms
  • Face or head
  • Chest
  • Back

What causes hyperhidrosis?

The nerves in our body cause us to sweat by sending a message to the brain that the body needs to sweat in order to cool down.  But when these nerves go into overdrive, they over-send these messages to the sweat glands.

This leads to excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

The precise causes of having hyperhidrosis are not fully known yet, but research has shown that:

  • There is a genetic link (i.e. if you are sweat excessively, you probably have a relative who has the same experience)
  • It can be caused by an underlying medical condition such as gout or diabetes
  • It can be a side effect of certain medications
  • It can occur during the time of menopause for some women

What is the treatment for hyperhidrosis or excessive perspiration?

Some individuals find they can control their sweating using strong antiperspirants or other primarily topical solutions. Others learn to live with the condition and simply refuse to wear light coloured clothing, which they may find limiting but achievable. However, this is an embarrassing problem that affects sufferers regardless of the season and usually has life-style impacts. It can be comforting to know that treatment is available from our Coco Ruby Skin & Anti-Ageing team – particularly our top Injector, Sandra Wallace Senior Injecting RN.

Muscle relaxant injections and other injectables are some of the most popular and most successful forms of non-surgical treatments for those people who haven’t responded well to antiperspirant or other temporary remedies.

Sweat gland disabling and muscle relaxant injections: Quick, Effective Treatment with Very Little Downtime

The anti-excessive sweating injections work by disabling the sweat glands in the affected regions. They can have a positive effect to help reduce or to stop excessive sweating, at least temporarily – but they can be repeated as they do wear off after 9 months to about one year for most patients.

Duration of Effectiveness of Injections for Excess Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Treatment results can last for up to 9 or 12 months, although everyone reacts to the treatments differently.

  • Hyperhidrosis injectables may work for less time for some individuals than for others.
  • Treatments can be repeated as required.
  • Each injectables procedure usually takes under 15 to 30 minutes per area (underarms, for example, can take less than 5 to 10 minutes per armpit area).
  • The treatment has minimal downtime and is not uncomfortable for most people – because the injection needles are so thin (micro-fine injections)
  • The injections are over very quickly and they are short in duration and depth; but if you’re worried about being uncomfortable, your Clinician can provide you with medical-grade pre-treatment numbing cream

After Injections to Reduce or Stop Excess Sweating

It may take up to a week to 10 days for the full effects of Hyperhidrosis Injection Treatments to be felt and seen, as the sweat glands will need to adjust to the treatment that has been injected.

After treatment, you may be a little sore for a few days in the treated areas. But within a short period of time, you will be able to wear all of those items of clothing you feared wearing due to revealing sweat marks or perspiration stains.

Ready to sweat less and smile more?

Injections can restore your confidence to wear lighter coloured clothing or attend social functions in summer – or any time of the year – without the risk of embarrassing perspiration levels. And if you play sports, attend gym classes or feel embarrassed or impeded by excessive levels of perspiration no matter the time of year, this might be the solution you’ve been looking for.
